Newburgh: Portrait of a City

One of the most significant portrait photographers working in Britain from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, Dmitri Kasterine began his career working for publications such as Jocelyn Stevens’ Queen. His portraits and reportage have featured in publications including Harpers & Queen, Vogue, Interview, and the New York Times. Since 1986, he has lived in the United States.

For the last sixteen years, Dmitri has taken photographs in the city of Newburgh, and documented the experiences of residents living here. Newburgh: Portrait of a City is scheduled to be published by Norton in September 2012, and to coincide with the publication, an outdoor exhibition of mural size prints is planned for display on the wall of the Ritz Theatre, Newburgh. (A mock-up of the exhibition is shown above.)

An appeal for contributions for the exhibition has been launched through online crowd funding website Kickstarter. Here you can find further details about the exhibition, in addition to video interviews with the photographer and residents. Portraits from the series can also be explored via the photographer’s website and blog.
