Established in 2011 by Fiona Rogers, Cultural & Education Manager at Magnum Photos London, Firecracker is an online platform which supports European women photographers, by showcasing their work in a series of online monthly galleries.
On 1 September, Firecracker announced the recipient of its inaugural Photographic Grant, awarded to a female photographer born or residing in Europe, to support a documentary project. Congratulations to grant winner Jo Metson Scott, who has been awarded the grant for her work-in-progress, The Grey Line, a reflection on war told from the perspectives of US and UK soldiers who have spoken out against the Iraq War. A selection of images and full details of the project can be viewed in Firecracker’s September feature.
Congratulations also to highly commended photographers Abbie Trayler-Smith, whose visual essay ‘The Big O’ examines teenage obesity through the stories of two teenagers, Chelsea and Shannon; and Agata Pietron whose series ‘War Songs’ tells the journey into adulthood of teenagers living in North and South Kivu in Democratic Republic of Congo.
